As the 12th Generation of Whalers, Mariners, Fisherman, Norm was a Retired Coast Guard Captain and a commercial fisherman. At the time of Norm's diagnosis, he was the sole operator of the F/V Petrel homeported at Three Mile Harbor, NY. He fished for porgies, flounder, snapper, and the like in Gardiner's Bay.
Born and raised on the East End of Long Island, Norm is remembered for his devotion to family, faith and fish. There are glimmers from Norm here on this blog, but as his Stage IV brain tumor progressed, we, his wife and his children, added what we could to his amazing journey through healing and hope. And we continue to do so....
The main photo is by Rebecca Hale. In 2008, she came to photograph Norm and other area fisherman for a publication by the Northeast Atlantic Marine Alliance. Norm, and his trademark "Gone Fishing" hat made the cover!
Norm, I too am a brain tumor survivor. Had a meningioma removed in 2002. I've been fine till just recently when the 2 pieces they couldn't removed surgically began to grow - meaning I will start radiation soon. God, family and friends are blessings, as are the medical staff. I will keep you in my prayers as you fight your most recent battle (which was forwarded to me via a fisheries list I am on).
